PRINCIPLES
Adopted by a majority vote at the OCDC meeting, on July 26, 2007
1. We, Otsego County Democrats, believe in democratic communities in which individual freedoms are balanced by common
responsibilities.
2. We are guided by the Declaration of Independence, the United States Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.
3. We are committed to creating a sustainable environment with protected natural resources in order to pass on to future
generations a cleaner and safer world.
4. We cannot ignore national and international events that influence Otsego County's political, economic, and environmental
conditions.
5. We aim to turn our nation in a new direction, focusing on the needs of people, investing in peace, respecting international
law, and rejecting the use of force except when under direct attack or for humanitarian reasons when explicitly sanctioned
by the United Nations.
6. We believe that taxes must be equitably collected and distributed to promote the welfare of the entire community.
7. We must develop economic policies which benefit the self-employed and which secure a living wage sufficient for the
needs of families.
8. We must improve essential public services with cost effective investments to ensure a safe and prosperous community.
9. We aim to strengthen local government and democratic participation by encouraging civic virtue and by assuring transparency
and accountability.
10. We advocate full public financing of elections
_____________
WHY WE ARE DEMOCRATS
I was never a Republican, because those gentlemen, distinguished as they are, have only one real interest, and that is
the making of special laws in order to protect their fortunes. I also know they have no compassion for the masses of people
in the country who are without money and who are, many of them, without food or houses. I have always thought that only as
a Democrat, reflecting Jefferson and Jackson, could justice ever be done the people because at this moment in history, ours
is the only party which is even faintly responsive to the force of ideas. - Samuel Tilden, 1876 Democratic Presidential candidate.

Otsego County Democratic Committee (OCDC)
2007 Platform On Local Issues
Adopted on September 24, 2007 __________________________________________
I. Economy and Taxes
a) To improve the economic and business climate and to lower electric power costs, we urge a feasibility study on the
establishment of municipal power in Otsego County.
b) To promote home and property ownership, preserve the family farm, and encourage small business, replace real property
taxes with local graduated income taxes.
c) Seek Federal, State and private not-for-profit funding for the erection of quality affordable housing to serve working
families and individuals with lower incomes.
d) Encourage the Otsego County public transportation system to better serve the schedules of working individuals.
e) Explore the possible tax and energy savings in the replacement of school bus fleets with a countywide transportation
system serving students as well as the general public.
g) Until such time as there is a single payer healthcare system, encourage the provision of healthcare for uninsured and
underinsured patients in Otsego County.
II. Environment
a) Develop a comprehensive sustainable 'green plan' for Otsego County to explore development of small scale alternative
energies under local control, promote local food production, limit sprawl, improve local public transportation, preserve resources,
and reduce waste products.
b) Encourage county land trusts by promoting agriculturally friendly conservation easements and purchases of development
rights to preserve open space and to make farmland more affordable for farmers.
III. Government and Elections
a) Support the enforcement of all existing Federal and State anti-discrimination laws and Federal and State hate crimes
legislation.
